Great Whites Not So Great

Posted on September 4, 2007 at 10:55 PM

Well, science has killed yet another piece of my childhood today: 3-D digital modeling of a great white shark’s jaw muscles, tendons, bones, etc. (plus a lot of dissecting and anatomizing) is expected to indicate that the great white’s bite has less raw power than those of tiger and bull sharks. Daniel Huber of the University of Tampa in Florida (where the sharks are) told LiveScience that “the white has the narrowest head of the three, so it has less space for jaw muscles. Consequently, we’re expecting that it will have a lower bite force on a pound-for-pound basis.”

But don’t worry, because the great white’s saw-edge teeth (that’s why they shake their prey once it’s chomped— to saw it apart) are there to do all the mutilating and killing and whatnot.
