Just Be Glad They Couldn't Fly

Posted on September 29, 2007 at 8:32 PM

According to a new study in the journal Science, a velociraptor forearm found in Mongolia is lined with what scientists call "quill knobs," a fancy name for bumps where feathers attach to the bone.

Yes, it's official: velociraptor is now among the feathered dinos. The study's lead author, Alan Turner of Columbia University and the American Musueum of Natural History, said in a statement that "finding quill knobs on velociraptor... means that it definitely had feathers. This is something we'd long suspected, but no one had been able to prove." However, there's no chance the beast could fly – its forelimbs were too short. The study theorizes that the feathers may have been used for mating displays, nest guarding, temperature regulation, and maneuverability while running at high speeds.

For my part, I'm glad the things didn't fly. If they had, right now we might be eating small mammals raw and wearing three-fingered gloves.
